Job Description

The Staff Nurse is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The Staff Nurse supports professional nursing practice across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. 

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess and monitor patients before, during, and after the apheresis procedure.
  • Ensure that patients are appropriately prepared for the procedure, including checking vital signs, medical history, and obtaining consent.
  • Administer medications, including pre-procedure medications (e.g., anticoagulants), as prescribed by the physician.
  • Monitor patient comfort and address any concerns during the procedure.
  • Provide post-procedure care, including monitoring for adverse reactions or complications and managing patient recovery.
  • Apheresis Procedure Support:
  • Assist in setting up, operating, and troubleshooting apheresis equipment under the supervision of the clinical team.
  • Ensure that all necessary materials for the apheresis procedure (e.g., blood bags, filters) are prepared and sterile.
  • Follow the protocols for blood collection and processing, ensuring the highest standards of safety and care.
  • Documentation & Reporting:
  • Accurately document patient information, including vital signs, procedure details, and any adverse events or complications.
  • Maintain thorough records of each apheresis procedure and communicate with the clinical team regarding patient status.
  • Patient Education:
  • Educate patients and their families about the apheresis procedure, its purpose, and post-procedure care instructions.
  • Provide reassurance and emotional support to patients, especially those undergoing the procedure for the first time.
  • Compliance & Safety:
  • Adhere to all hospital policies, procedures, and safety standards, particularly related to infection control and patient safety.
